When Abraham was approximately 86 years old the Lord promised Abraham that he would have an heir, and that Abraham's descendants would be as numerous as the stars and to his descendants God would give them the land from the river of Egypt to the great river, Euphrates ( Genesis 15). This was a reassurance of the promise in Genesis 12.

We know that about this same time period, Sarah told Abraham to go into her handmaid, Hagar, and that perhaps they might have an heir by her. This was a mistake. Ishmael was born from this union and about 14 years later a son, Isaac was born to Sarah and Abraham. Abraham was 100 years old (Genesis21:1-7.) Isaac was the son of promise.
