Here was buried thomas jefferson author of the declaration of american independence of the statute of virginia for religious freedom and father of the university of virginia.
Thomas Jefferson for one (there may be others). Jefferson wrote his own epitaph before he died, and it is engraved on his tombstone: "Here was buried Thomas Jefferson Author of the Declaration of American Independence Of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom & Father of the University of Virginia."
Much of his life is not told on his tombstone. He wrote out what he wanted and it mainly states he wrote the Declaration of Independence. He did much more. The tombstone is not on his plantation where he is buried but has been at the University of Missouri for many years. Recently it was found in poor shape in a corner of an attic broken in 3 parts. The Smithsonian institution has it now and working to repair it and restore it as much as they can.
The three accomplishments that Thomas Jefferson wanted listed on his gravestone were author of the Declaration of Independence, author of the statute of Virginia, and father of the University of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson made this clear in his will.
"Here was buried Thomas Jefferson Author of the Declaration of American Independence of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom & Father of the University of Virginia." If you notice it does not mention his presidency. This is because after much unpopular actions, the embargo act being a big one, he felt as if his presidency was a failure. Little did he know how much adoration America would have for him in the future.

Maybe thomas Jefferson didn't want everyone to know about how he was a presidant, he might have been prouder about how he was the author the the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson may have forgot to write his gravestone thing. So it might be the fact that one of his relatives wrote this and knew that Thomas did not want his presidency in words on his stone. His relatives might even be jealous, but other then that i have no clue. After Thomas Jefferson died, a member of his family found instructions that Jefferson had left as to what should be placed on his tombstone. Jefferson considered these three accomplishments the most important to him, and he hoped he would be remembered for them. HERE WAS BURIED THOMAS JEFFERSON AUTHOR OF THE DECLARATION OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE OF THE STATUTE OF VIRGINIA FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND FATHER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA Jefferson, of course, accomplished much more during his lifetime. He served as colonial and state representative and governor of Virginia; held various public offices, including ambassador and Secretary of State, Vice President, and 3rd President of the United States. He was also instrumental in obtaining the Louisiana Territory for the United States, which doubled the size of the nation, and getting Congress to appropriate funds for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was also a noted scientist and inventor and agriculturalist.
