What does the surname McGinn mean?
When I was in Ireland it was explained to me like this. McGinn
was originally Mag Fionn. Mag or Mc meaning - son of. Fionn or any
variant such as Finn, Fenian, Ginn, Glynn, or Flynn. All refer to
the Fenians. So as it was described to me by an older irish man.
Mag Fionn, or McGinn basically mean Sons of the Fenians. Or sons of
the Irish warriors.
It was also told to me that there were 4 original counties. We
originally come from Ulster. But you can find alot of McGinn's in
Amagh.
Fionn is translated sometimes as Fair in complexion. This has
been said it was meant in a mean way by vikings. In otherwords we
were not pale and blonde, but the opposite dark haired, and
complexion.
