They lived in parts of northern Arizona, northern New Mexico, and southern Utah and Colorado. They live between the four mountains: Mt. Blanca, Mt. Taylor, San Fransisco Peak, and Mt. Hesperus. They also lived around the two center mountains: Gobernador knob (Ch'óol'í'í or Fir Mt) and Dzil Ná'oodilii or El Huerfano Mountain. They live currently in the four corners (Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico) as they have for centuries up to at least 100 years before Columbus. The Navajo Nation actually comprises the largest reservation in the US.
Traditionally, women sit on the north side and men on the south side. Everyone enters in a door on the east side facing the dawn. Everyone moves around in a clockwise fashion. Beside being a traditional home a hogan has religious meaning. The first one is said to have been made by one of the Holy People (Diyin Dine'e') made of white shell, turquoise, abalone and jet with a rainbow for the roof. The female hogan is modeled after the shape of the mountain Huerfano Mesa or Dzil Na'oodilii where First Man and First Woman lived and Changing Woman gave birth to the Hero Twins among other things. . The male Hogan shape after the moutain where Changing Woman was found by Talking God, Gobernador Knob, or Ch'óol'í'í.

The Shoshone Indians traditionally lived in cone-shaped homes called tipis, which were constructed using wooden poles covered with animal hides. These portable structures allowed the Shoshone to easily disassemble and move their homes as they followed game and resources throughout the year. Additionally, some groups of Shoshone also built more permanent earth lodges, which were semi-subterranean structures made from a framework of wooden poles covered in earth and grass.
Kin yaa'áaánii means Towering House clan. They are one of the four original clans. They are said to have been created by Changing Woman first. Changing Woman rubbed the skin from her breast. She combined that with the Niłch'i Dine'é (The Air People) and formed people who became the Kinyaa'ą́ąnii . She sent them east from where she was in the west.Kinyaa'ą́ąnii is a name of a Pueblo ruin in the Crownpoint area of New Mexico so perhaps there is some relationship to the Pueblo poepl who lived there. I have attached a map. They are related to:Dziłt'aadí ----- Near the Mountain Clan'Azee'tsoh dine'e--- The Big Medicine People ClanTazhii dine'e---The Turkey People ClanBit'ahnii----His sheaves…Leaf clan…Under his cover clan, Folded arms peopleHalgai Dine'e ---People of the Valley clan (Adopted Clan)Shash dine'e --The Bear People Clan (Adopted clan)Naadaa' dine'e -----The corn people clan ( adopted)One story is:To the Kin Yaa'áanii, Changing Woman gave a cane (gish) made of white shell, which became the Sacred White Shell Gish. Through this gift, people of the Kin Yaa'áanii Clan became respected leaders, guides, & teachers. Changing woman gave them bear (shash) as their symbol of protection. It is a strong symbol, & the claws & skin are seen in sand paintings for the Mountain & Bear Chants. The bear is called dzil yaah naagháhí, meaning "one that walks on the mountains." Some clans tell the story that the keeper of the White Shell gish became frustrated when he dug for water & found none. He threw the gish against a canyon wall. When the people saw him standing there, they mistook the canyon wall for a house. This is how the clan became known as the Towering House Clan.Another story:In the days before horses, our ancestors came to settle with the Anaasazi who lived at Towering House. There, the Anaasazi had turkeys. A turkey shook its feathers and all types of corn came out. Our people took the corn, and the Towering House people were the first of our clans to plant it. Later, there was a dispute with the Anaasazi living there, and our clan moved on As the clans were about to leave, Changing Woman gave them five animals to protect them, the Great Snake, Fearless Bear, Gentle Deer, Upright Porcupine, and the Mighty Puma, and gave the clan a wand of white shell . Hopi members of the Asngyam clan (Tansy Mustard) could have been incorporated into this clan after the late-17th century. Towering House is also part of the Hailway origin story.
