Dwarves' names, for example, are often Old Norse, and the Rohirrim's are usually Old English. Similarly, place names like The Shire are English words, but appropriate translations are difficult to find.Tolkien, himself an expert in Germanic languages, weighed in extensively on translations being done during his lifetime, especially after what he considered to be terrible translations were published in Dutch and Swedish. He ended up writing an extensive commentary, Guide to the Names in The Lord of the Rings, which he sent to subsequent translators; it was published after his death.
