It cannot be discounted that they did have nuclear weapons. There is certainly now several sources which suggest they did have nuclear weapons. In 1942 two German scientists Eric Shumann and Walter Trinks, working for Projekt R, Heereswaffenamt (Army Ordnance Department) developed a bi-conical hollow charge tactical nuclear weapon with a yield of about 0.8 kilotons. It operated by using two opposed hollow charge warheads with conical Lithium Liners to drive a molten mass of Lithium into a small Vacuum cavity. At the centre of that cavity according to their surviving manuscripts and patents, was a small mass, about 150 grams of Uranium 233 coated with Lithium Deuteride. A US Intelligence report declassified in 1978 contained the affidavit of a German spotter plane pilot sent up to observe a nuclear test blast at Rugen island in October 1944. He reported watching a shock wave and huge bright flash, then electronic disturbances to his radio. He watched a boiling explosion cloud climb from the test site with many brilliant flashes in the cloud. He landed his aircraft then took off again later possibly in a different aircraft, though this is not clear and when he returned to the area he observed a huge mushroom cloud up to 23,000 feet. An Italian press correspondent Luigi Romersa described a similar nuclear test blast which he observed from a sealed bunker at Rugen, whilst Japanese diplomatic signals also mention the Nazi nuclear weapon
