Islamic perspective on female circumcision?

This is an interesting question. There is nothing in either the Qur'an or the Sunna supporting Female Circumcision further those societies which practice this have done so for ages longer than they have been either Muslim or Christian. Further there is no known Hadith which requires female circumcision. Some have argued that one Hadith, appears to accept it: "Circumcision is a commendable act for men (Sunnah) and is an honorable thing for women (Makromah)." [Al-shawkani, Nayl Al-awtar, Dar Al-Jeel, Beirut, 1973, vol. 1, p. 139.]There are two observations on this Hadith:a) A distinction must be made between male circumcision which is described as commendable (ie Sunnah) while another quite a different description is given to female circumcision (Makromah) which term implies no binding religious obligation.b) As well this Hadith is considered to be of weak authenticity according to Hadith scholars. However, there is a more authentic Hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) is reported to have passed by a woman performing circumcision on a young girl. He instructed the woman, saying:"Cut off only the foreskin (outer fold of skin over the clitoris; the prepuce) but do not cut off deeply (i.e. the clitoris itself), for this is brighter for the face (of the girl) and more favorable with the husband." [Al-Tabarani, quoted in Al-albani, Muhammad N., Silsilat al-Ahadeeth Al-Sahihah, Al Maktab Al-Islami, Beirut, Lebanon, 1983, vol. 2, Hadeeth no. 722, pp. 353-358 espeically pp. 356-257. See also N. Keller (translator/editor), The Reliance of the Traveller by Ahmad al-Masri, Modern Printing Press, Dubai, 1991, e 4.3, p. 5]While it is true that the Prophet (Pbuh) did not explicitly ban this practice it is also true that his words have within them a deep well of sensitivity to the needs of females and to their matrimonial happiness and their legitimate enjoyment within marriage.Muhammad's words also stand in stark contrast to the argument that female circumcision "controls" the woman's sexual appetite and hence contributes to her sexual morality and virtue. While it is true that Islam requires adherents of both genders to be chaste, there is no text in the Qur'an or Sunnah which requires curtailment of the sexual desire of women. Because chastity and virtue are based on the person's spiritual and moral values not upon the removal of a sensitive and crucial human organ.

Why do Muslims circumcise?

Circumcision, though not mentioned in the Qur'an, is practiced among Islamic peoples and is most often considered to be a Sunnah (a holy tradition). The explanation for Muslim circumcision is that it is a sign of Abraham's covenant with God. This is the same explanation that is used in Judaism. Some Muslim scholars believe circumcision is a requirement. Some others say it is not required. There is even a movement within Islam that opposes circumcision on the basis of the belief that it is a sin to alter the body in any way.In Muslim countries where it is practiced circumcision usually pre-dates Islam. For instance, there are records of it being common in Egypt as far back as the Sixth Dynasty (2345 - 2181 BC).Because Gods wanted all descendants of Abraham to be circumcised.
