its pretty much just putting it in standbye mode, which means everything will be the same when it turns back on. kind of like a more discrete log off. also it happens when your lapotop runs low on battery, it hibernates to save information and awaits a power supply.

It simply goes into a 'low-power' state. The display is turned off, and power to the disk-drives and CPU is reduced. The computer runs a small monitor program in the background to check if a key has been pressed - if so it restores the display and returns full power to the other componens.

Hibernating is a process that causes the computer to write everything on the RAM temporarily to the Hard Drive. What this means is that you can effectively turn your computer off, eliminating energy usage, but still keep the session that you were working on. Hibernation is useful if you have a lot of applications open that you do not want to close, but you still want to conserve electricity.

However, it is not recommended that you use hibernation too regularly, as firstly it can cause a build up of undeleted files on your hard-drive, but also, it often takes longer for a computer to resume a session from hibernation than to normally switch on.

The memory contents have been saved to disk and memory refresh has been stopped to save power, resulting in loss of memory contents in the memory itself. The CPU internal and external clocks are stopped to save power and the CPU has been placed in a state that only an interrupt can get it out of and resume processing. Most computer's power supplies also remove power to peripherals.

Basically nothing happens as everything is effectively turned off or waiting for the interrupt to signal time to wake up.

It stores all RAM data on the hard drive and shuts off the computer. When you boot again, the RAM data is being read from the hard drive and you can continue your previous working session.

only to save power, while preserving the state of your computer. Hibernating is NOT recommended with many SSD's.
