The yak has many adaptations that makes it suited to its environment. It has an extremely rough tongue for scraping moss and lichen off rocks; a larger rumen than a cow, so that they can take more food in and let it sit in the rumen for a longer period of time; a longer intestine than a carnivore which allows for more nutrient absorption from food that is not very nutritious; larger lungs and heart and a larger blood count than cows, allowing for good blood flow at cold temperatures and efficient oxygen exchange; a coarse coat that helps keep the yak warm; and broad hooves for rocky and uneven terrain.
Some of the adaptations of a yak are:The yak's mouth is adapted for grazing a variety of plants. The yak's thick coat of hair protects the yak from cold. The yak's large chest and lungs are adaptations to low oxygen contents in the mountains. The yak uses its hooves and horns to break the ice from frozen ground and graze on the grass below.
The yak is found in some parts of Asia. There are two types of yak, the domestic and wild yak. The wild yak is much bigger than the domestic yak. The yak is a cold climate animal and travels in snow.
