A construction glue called PL300 is formulated specially to hang panelling and foam board. PL300 is most convenient in caulk tube form, to use in a caulking gun.
PL300 is recommended and very good for panelling and styrofoam .
if it is a lightweight mirror, use VERY STRONG adhesive padding.
If someone is going to do wall paneling there are a variety of products that someone will need. Some of these products are Adhesive, nail gun, level, tape measure, a hammer and screw fixes.
You will get better results if you aim your effort at removing the paneling and preparing the wall board or plaster behind it. Paneling, even if you fill the grooves, will have waves. If I were going to leave the paneling on because it was applied with adhesive that created excessive damage to the wall behind it, I would put 1/4" drywall panels over it and tape and spackle.
You have to know the adhesive AND the ceiling construction really well to do that. I much prefer to find a joist or rafter with a studfinder, then put a hook into the wood to hang anything from a ceiling. - You wouldn't want adhesive failing and dropping something .
