The South had the advantage of having European powers behind it, backing it up. While it's true that communist China and the Soviet Union were supporting North Korea with modern weaponry and supplies, the South was able to have military superiority, only being pushed back by extremely large numbers of Chinese infantry storming into Korea to save the North.

During the war, the South practically had total domination in naval and aerial warfare.
