An electromagnet can be turned "off" and "on". It was one of the great benefits verses a permanent magnet. If you'll watch video of a salvage yard, you will notice they hoist huge electormagnets to pick up scrap metal, and then cut the magnetism so that they can drop the debris in a desired location
