Experts are not sure, and studies and research are ongoing. Several theories exist but unfortunately, none of these theories has yet been scientifically proven. Most experts agree that the immune system of people with Crohn's disease reacts abnormally - it treats good bacteria, foods, and other substances that are good for us as foreign and unwanted substances. In other words, the patients own immune system attacks. This leaves us with the question, does Crohn's disease cause an abnormal immune system response, or does an abnormal immune system response cause Crohn's disease

There are no dietary causes of Crohns disease. The cause of Crohns disease is unknown. Although there are no specific foods or diet that prevent or cures Crohn's disease, restoring and maintaining proper nutrition is a vital part of the medical management Crohns. Diet can however affect symptoms. Patients with active Crohns disease are advised to reduce high fiber and highly spiced foods for the duration of the flare. When Crohns is inactive, patients are encouraged to eat whatever they will tolerate.

There are a number of current treatments available for Crohns disease. Not all treatments will work on every patient as symptoms vary.

Anti-inflammatory drugs such as Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), Mesalamine (Asacol, Rowasa)and Corticosteroids are all used with excellent success.

Immune suppressors are also an option. Azathioprine (Imuran) and mercaptopurine (Purinethol)are used however they can take as long as four months to show results. Infliximab (Remicade)is a drug for adults and children with moderate to severe Crohns disease who don't respond to or can't tolerate other treatments such as an allergy to sulpha products. Adalimumab (Humira). Adalimumab works similarly to Infliximab by blocking TNF (tumor necrosis factor)for people with moderate to severe Crohns disease. It's prescribed for people who haven't been helped by Infliximab or other treatments.

New medications are in development constantly and many more new drugs are in clinical trial.
