Yes, patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may have headaches that can sometimes be associated with migraine-type headaches. But lupus is not necessarily an underlying cause of every headache, including migraines, as tension-type headaches, medication overuse, stress, insomnia, or other factors could contribute to headaches. New, severe, persistent, or unusual headaches in a person with lupus should not be immediately dismissed as migraines. Although rare, lupus can cause neurological manifestations, thus requiring an immediate medical evaluation. Hence, in such cases, contacting a healthcare provider should be the first step in managing a serious condition. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have new, severe headaches associated with weakness, confusion, seizures, visual disturbances, or speech difficulties. In addition, a physician can determine if the headaches are indeed migraines or caused by other conditions in patients with lupus. MedicoExperts can also assist by providing referrals to medical specialists who can perform an examination and recommend migraine-specific treatment.
