A filly or colt can begin reproducing as young as a year old, but that can cause problems for the horses later on. No horse should be bred just because someone wants a foal. A horse should be purebred, registered, have at a minimum good conformation and temperament. It would also be best for the horse to have a good show record. Horses purchased solely to breed from should be at least three or four years old.
