Apart from James, brother of Jesus, there is nothing outside the Bible to suggest that any of the apostles were actually persecuted in any way. Acts of the Apostles does say that Peter was imprisoned, but surely the inability of the authorities to keep him in prison would have meant that they would have ceased the futile task of persecuting him. As to the remainder of the apostles, Christian traditions grew up over the ensuing centuries, attributing wonderful miracles and great courage in the face of martyrdom to each of the apostles, even Peter who was beheaded (second century) or crucified upside down (third century). Tradition permitted only the apostle John to live into his old age.
