There was no set age for a gladiator, it was size that mattered. A man had to have reached his full growth in heigth and had to have begun to fill out. Generally this is/was about the age of 20. No owner of a gladiatorial school would dare put a skinny teenager up against a hefty seasoned gladiator.
They killed the animals they brought into the colosseum.

the emperor Nero, who killed Christians by making them into candles. he sometimes made then fight weaponless in the Colosseum against the lions!
From what I've read, in the Roman Colosseum alone about 500,000 humans were killed, and 1,000,000 animals lives were taken. In the overall gladiatorial games I'm not sure how many people were killed, but I'm sure no matter what we wouldn't be pleased with the answer. Hope I helped :)
