Alpers mostly affects young children, with symptoms appearing at anytime but usually between the ages of 2-4. The outlook is poor with death occuring usually between 1-10 years after onset of symptoms. It is said that 80% of Alpers patients die before the age of 2 and 20% can live up to 25 years old.
With my experience as I am an Alpers mom and involved in many Alpers and Mito disease groups, I am seeing that most children die before they can be 10 years old. Not all but most of the children. My son was 9 when he passed July 17, 2011. He had his first real symptoms at 3 1/2 with seizures. He was misdiagnosed Cerebral Palsy until 2 weeks before he died from liver and multiple organ failure. He was given depakote which is a mito-toxic drug.*** RIP Eman***
