Some babies sit up by 6 months. Apparently, however, not sitting up by 9 months isn't a big deal either.

Not all babies are the same and they do not all develop at the same rate. Some babies are able to fall asleep on their own when they are a month old. Other babies do not fall asleep on their own until they are almost a year old.
All babies develop at their own pace. A baby should be able to sit up by themselves between 5 and 7 months. Keep in mind in the beginning they will need some support like pillows stacked around them and as time goes on and muscles strengthen they will be able to do it by themselves.

It is really up to the parents. They need to feel that the baby sitter can be trusted with their children. I personally don't think the sitter should below the age of fourteen, just my personal opinion.
