When Elizabeth I died, she was the last of the House of Tudor monarchs. Her first cousin, twice removed was James VI of Scotland, and he was next in line of succession for the English throne. He came to the throne as James I of England and started the House of Stuart.
James I came to the throne of England on March 24, 1603, following the death of Queen Elizabeth I. He was also James VI of Scotland and had already been king there since 1567. His ascension marked the beginning of the Stuart dynasty in England and the unification of the crowns of England and Scotland.
Queen Elizabeth 1 of England was succeeded by King James 1 of England.
This was James 1st, who came to the throne in 1603- his predecessor, Elizabeth 1st, died unmarried and childless, which brought to an end the Tudor dynasty (which was Welsh in origin). In those days, Scotland was still a seperate kingdom, so if an English monarch died without a successor then the throne of England passed to the Scottish king. This was James- in Scotland, he was the 6th king to be called James, but only the first one in England, so for that reason he is sometimes known as 'James the 6th and 1st'. James's surname was Stuart, so his reign ushered in the Stuart dynasty. He died in 1625 at the age of 58, and was succeeded by his son Charles 1st.

After the death of Elizabeth I, the crown passed to her second cousin, James VI of Scotland, son of Elizabeth's cousin, Mary Stuart. The Stuarts were related to the Tudors thru Henry VIII's oldest sister, Margaret, who had been married to James IV of Scotland, but with the ascension of James to the throne, the direct Tudor line died out and the Stuart line began.
After Queen Elizabeth I's reign, the Stuart dynasty came to power in England. Elizabeth I died in 1603 without an heir, leading to the accession of James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England. This marked the beginning of the Stuart era, which lasted until the English Civil War in the mid-17th century.
In the middle of the Stuart ruling, Oliver Cromwell executed Charles and took over the throne. This was called Commonwealth. Then The stuarts came back on the throne and after that it was the Hanovers.

Mary I of Scotland (Mary, Queen of Scots) came to the throne on 14 Dec 1542. Mary I of England (Bloody Mary) came to the throne on 19 July 1553.
On the death of Queen Anne, King George [I] inherited the English throne on what might be considered a technicality. Ironically, the English government considered that the very German George from the House of Hanover, to be less of a risk than Queen Anne's half brother James Edward Stuart. So it came to pass that England had a mostly non-resident and non-English speaking king with little or no interest in England.
