Not according to Fred Bronson's The Billboard Book of Number One Hits. In the 1997 edition, Bronson names The Beatles' "Hey Jude" (1968), at 7:11, to be the longest #1 single of all time. This edition takes Don McLean's "American Pie" single (1972) into account.
While the complete album version of "American Pie" is indeed longer (at 8:27), the single was split into two parts. Even though radio DJs apparently did favour the long version, this is possibly why "Hey Jude" is considered a longer single.
Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" is 12:00 on the album version. The U.S. single edit, which hit #1, is only 5:09 in length.
