There are different types of receptors, which allow neurons to receive information. In nose you have chemoreceptors. In eyes you have photoreceptor. In the ears you have hair cells of different length, which resonates with sounds of different frequency. On the surface of the tongue you have again chemoreceptors. In the skin you have different types of receptors to give you information like heat, cold, pain, touch and vibration sense.

The synapse is the space between the two communicating neurons, where the transmission of neurotransmitters takes place. It is very important, because it is like a bridge between the two neurons that are communicating. It is where the information is transmitted from one neuron to the next. In the presynaptic neuron there are neurotransmitters in vesicles (enclosed containers for storing the neurotransmitters). Just before one neuron communicates to the next the action potential reaches the presynaptic neuron's terminal, which activates ion channels to open. When these channels open calcium ions flood in. The calcium ions cause some of the vesicles containing neurotransmitters to fuse with the membrane. Then the neurotransmitters are released into the synapse. The neurotransmitters then fuse with the postsynaptic neuron onto chemical receptors that match their molecular shape, which causes ion channels in the postsynaptic neuron to open. When the calcium ions enter the postsynaptic neuron they set off a graded potential in the postsynaptic neuron. This starts the whole process of communication over in the next neuron so it can continue sending information along its path and to other neurons or cells. Therefore, the synapse is very important, because it helps the communication to pass from one neuron to the next and starts the process again in the receiving neuron.

Although the synapse serving as a bridge between the presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons is important, it certainly is not the only important function it has worth mentioning. It also slows down the process of communicating by a couple of milliseconds, which is a significant amount of time for the chemical transmission. We know that speed is very important in the communication of neurons; however, this slowing adds important complexities to the process of communication.
