If you take a cheque to your bank to pay it in, the bank will credit your account with the amount, but you will not be able to withdraw this amount until the bank has processed the cheque internally and received the money from the bank issuing the cheque. When they have done this the money is 'really' in you account and you can take it out - the cheque has cleared. This practice was needed (and reasonable) when cheques had to be processed between banks manually and protected the bank from the effects of bad cheques. However modern banking means that the clearing is electronic and yet the banks still keep the cleared funds for the same amount of time they always did (a week) - they use these uncleared funds themselves and it is wrong!
A bank check can be used in many ways. A check is useful for when a person does not have the cash on hand to use. The funds should be available in the bank though so it will not bounce the check.
At the bank that you use
A check verification system can vary from bank to bank, but most use a variety of watermarks, ID checks and network communications to ensure the validity of a check.
In almost all cases, the balance between the check book and bank statement will not match because any transactions that you did using your ATM/Debit Card will not be recorded in your check book. The balance on your bank statement will be accurate and that shows the actual amount of money you have in your account. If you do not use your check book frequently then the entries in it may be old and outdated.
First off, do NOT just go off of when the funds from the check show up in your bank account. This just means that the money has been made available for you to use, but if something should come up with the check while it is going through the clearing house the bank will come back to you for the full amount of the check. To know if a cashier's check is a valid check, you need to contact the bank that issued the check. Do NOT call a phone number listed on the check itself. This could be a counterfeit check, and if it is the phone number will not be valid. Look up the bank's phone number online or in the phone book, or better yet, take the check into the bank and tell them that you are looking to know if it is a valid check with funds in the account to cover the amount of the check.

Yes. A check will not go through the bank if you don't have enough money in your account to honour it. So you can withdraw funds from your account and make your account balance less than the amount you have put in the check. This way the bank will reject the check and it won't go through the bank. However the bank will charge you a check bounce fee and the person to whom you gave the check can file a legal complaint against you and you can be jailed for doing this.

You would need a bank draft if you need to make a large purchase and do not have a credit card or that amount of cash. It is also good if you are a seller because there is no risk of a check bouncing.
You could, but they may use the amount from the check(s) you gave them to cover the insufficient funds you may owe on the account. Unless you make a deposit prior to cashing the check(s) in.
