One major example of Inbreeding was the royal European families in the middle ages. There was so little genetic diversity between these royal people. In the cases where inbreeding occurs, certain traits are found that may not be beneficial to the offspring. The same is seen in purebred dogs, where traits that are desirable are bred for. The results can be problems for the pups. Pugs do not look like wolves at all.

Why is inbreeding discouraged in families?

Genetically speaking, inbreeding tends to reinforce the negative qualities of the strain as opposed to the positive ones. An example is the Hapsburg family in Spain and Austria who, through inbreeding, developed a jutting lower jaw which in the most extreme cases impaired them when they tried to talk or eat.
