While there are variables, such as wind direction, strength and sustained flow, there is solid, established, evidence that some creatures, notably carrion feeders such as vultures, are able to detect very small particles of a scent (decaying flesh as an example), down into a very few parts per million. Vultures are not primarily sight feeders, but can detect and react to a scent, under favorable conditions from miles away.

Depends on the breed. Hunting dogs can scent you from farther away than a non-hunting dog. Example: If you have a (let's say) beagle and a miniature schnauzer, the first one to scent you will be the beagle.

It all depends on the breed and age of the dog. Also depends on the scent, but yes, some dogs can such as the blood hound.

It depends what tipe the dog is. A bloodhound can smell a human .3 or .4 miles away but if it is tracking the human it can smell a 3 day old trail.

Why do dogs sniff all over the place?

In fact the the dog is smelling places where other dogs have urinated. The smell that a dog leaves is called a scent. It tells the dog that another dog has been there and has marked its territory. It can tell the dog if other dog was a male or female. If the dog has sniffed the scent, it will leave its own message by urinating there.
