These glands produce a type of toxin called bufotoxin. bufotoxin varies in intensity, and when it is not potent enough to be lethal, it just taste really bitter. I have had one of the least potent bufotoxin in my mouth from an American toad (Bufo americanus) and it taste really bad! It is very bitter and believe me most predators do not like it either.
