Given that the Snowy River is almost 500km long, animals that are found along its length will vary, as the habitat changes, particularly towards the mouth of the river, where fresh water gives way to salt water.

The platypus lives in burrows dug in the banks of the Snowy River, and searches for food in the river itself. It does not live IN the Snowy River or, indeed, any river: nonetheless, platypus-watching is a popular past-time.

Similarly, the Blue-billed Duck and Freckled Duck can be seen feeding in the waters, although they do not live in the river either.

Frog species found around the Snowy River may include the Alpine Tree Frog, Southern Corroboree Frog, Booroolong Frog, Green and Golden Bell Frog and Southern Bell Frog.

There are a range of native and introduced fish species which live in the Snowy River. There are dozens of native species, including the River Blackfish, Australian Bass, Estuary Perch, Longfin and Shortfin Eels, Australian Grayling, Australian Smelt, Black Bream, Bridled Goby, Cox's Gudgeon, Common Silverbiddy, and several species of mullet.

Introduced species include salmon and trout. and even goldfish.
