Animal symbols in the Chinese New Year calendar repeat every 12 years.
The 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac are the mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, chicken, dog and pig. These 12 animals are lined in sequence and repeat every 12 years. So if you know the animal of a certain year, you can also figure out other years. For example, the animal of 2008 is mouse, so that of 2009 is ox.
The years of the Chinese and Gregorian calendars do not start on the same day. So from the 1st of January 1977 to the 17th of February, it was the Dragon. From the 18th of February onwards it was the Snake, finishing on the 6th of February 1978.
I think they use animals for different years because animals are sacred to some parts of the world, For instance - This year (2011) Is the Chinese year of the rabbit and to the Chinese the rabbit symbolises a person who Inspires adoration or hatred and some other things..;]

Last year's Chinese New Year was on a different day than this year's because our western (Gregorian) calendar clashes (doesn't match) with the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Thus, Chinese New Year is never on the same day every year.
