Penelope embodies four female archetypes: in her youth she was the virginal maiden until her wedding day when she married Odysseus. After moving to Ithica and becoming the mother of Telemachus, Penelope matures from the Faerie (virginal maiden) to the Wise One. Despite her longing for Odysseus while he is fighting in Troy, Penelope settles down and learns to raise Telemachus and defend her palace against the warring "suitors". She does this with the help of other Wise Ones (Eurycleia, the old maid and Athene). Her inherent creative powers of weaving and her deceiving elusiveness are evidence of the Lover archetype. Her belief in Odysseus' complementary cleverness allows her to maintain the strength she needs to sustain her position as "queen" of her little kingdom in Ithaca-despite the many attempts to depose her by the quarrelsome maids and suitors and her own rebellious teenage son.
Penelope is Odyssey's wife.
