Equilibrium.

What forces are opposing one another throughout the life of a star how do they influence the various stages in life cycle of a star?

The two opposing forces are gravity, pulling the star in and the outward force from the ongoing nuclear fusion reactions. As the star approaches the end of it's life, changes in the reactions occur, which cause the forces to balance out in different ways, changing the size of the star.

When a star's inward gravity and outward pressure are balance the star is said to be?

Hydrostatic equilibrium occurs when compression due to gravity is balanced by a pressure gradient which creates a pressure gradient force in the opposite direction. The balance of these two forces is known as the hydrostatic balance.

What 2 forces are equal in a main sequence star?

1. The nuclear forces trying to blow the star apart because of the immense energy created by the nuclear fusion reactions within the star, and 2. gravity, pulling the star inwards preventing that explosion. All stars have these two forces in balance including our sun, and so remain stable for millions of years. However, if too much fuel material is lost from the star (say, at the end of its life) then as its mass decreases gravity becomes too weak to prevent the nuclear forces blowing the star apart and so it forms a supernova. However, if the nuclear reactions stop (say, in a really big star) at the end of its life then the mass remains the same but the huge forces trying to blow the star apart reduce. Gravity therefore takes over and the star eventually collapses under its own gravity either to form a dense neutron star, or even a black hole.

What is a state in which all forces acting on an object are in balance?

Equilibrium is a state in which all forces acting on an object are in balance.

Why don't two forces balance each other?

Two forces do balance each other out, as long as the two forces are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.
