There is only one official nick name for North Dakota which was chosen by the North Dakota state legislature in 1957 and that is "The Peace Garden State". The "Flickertail State" was defeated by the North Dakota State Senate when it was proposed to be an emblem for North Dakota. The "Roughrider State" was used as a tourism promotion.
They include Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot. All the rest are below 40,000 in population. Due to the current oil boom in North Dakota, Williston and the surrounding area is experiencing economic and population growth which makes it an important city in North Dakota.
