Actually, Jefferson used the ideas of john Locke for the declaration. Those ideas were that man had the God given rights of changing the government when necessary, the right to happiness, the right to liberty. Despite what the declaration states it is not the governments job to make you happy or to guarantee your liberty. The big idea in the declaration was revolutionary since for a thousand years the world had been ruled by kings and the declaration turned this idea on it's side. It removed the king at the top and gave everyone else the power to change/form government.
