Annie Chapman was sometimes called 'Dark Annie'. She was said to be clever and when not drinking was quite industrious. She had been married at one time, but had been separated from her husband due to her excessive drinking habits. At the time of her death she was 47 years old. She was missing several of her front teeth, five feet tall, overweight, with blue eyes and short dark brown wavey hair. And like the Ripper's other victims she was a 'working girl'. Referred to as 'unfortunates, we in the 21st century call them prostitutes. And like most of the other victims she was basically homeless and trying to eek out an existance in the poorest part of London.
