The Amish are members of a conservative Christian religious sect that is an off-shoot of the Mennonite religion. The key concepts of this religion are the rejection of pride and a high value placed on humility.

They do not use modern conveniences such as electricity because they fear it will cause competition for status. They have a strong sense of community and faith in God.

Most are bi-lingual speaking Pennsylvania Dutch and English.

The Amish people came from all over Europe, but mostly from Germany, Belgium, and Turkey. They had very strict rules from the churches there and carried on their customs. They could have no facial hair, women could wear no makeup, and they never ate anything they didn't grow themselves.

The Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch lived simple lives and did not have electronic devices like phones or tablets. Women can't cut their hair and men could not have mustaches. They wore plain clothes withe no buttons and rode in horse drawn buggies. About 300,000 Amish live in America today.
