Aruba's most important historic event in the 20th century was the achievement of autonomy from the Lesser Netherlands Antilles in 1986.

Specifically, Aruba welcomed the new year in 1986 as a separate, autonomous member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This separate status, known as Status Aparte, officially occurred on January 1, 1986. Full independence, which was set for 1996, was postponed in 1990, and in 1995 Aruba rescinded the move to independence.
