Although it may look like it, buddhists don't worship anything or anyone. From a western point of view Buddhism is more a philosophy of living than a religion. Some followers of Buddhism may worship the buddha despite the fact that the buddha denied that he was a god and said that he should NOT be worshipped. Further, he stated that the debate about the exitence of god was irrelevant to achieving enlightenment and therefore did not confirm or deny the existence of a god.
