In the New Testament, with the coming of Jesus, the Old Testament priesthood was brought to an end, and the priesthood of Christ was established with the twelve apostles at the Last Supper in the upper room (Matthew 26:17-29; Mark 14:12-25; Luke 22:7-23). This priesthood is modeled on Christ's own priesthood, which is foreshadowed in Melchizedek (Heb 5:6; 6:20, and Heb 7 based on Psalm 110 which envisions the Messiah as both an enthroned King (Ps 110:1) and as a Melchizedekian priest (Ps 110:4)). Also see Heb 2:10; 5:5-10, Heb 1:6, Heb 2:11012, Heb 2:13014. Jesus chose the twelve apostles to serve as the heads of the new People of God (Matt 19:28; Rev 21:12-14). Their ministry is outlined in Acts 15:23; 1 Cor 4:15, Acts 14:23. The exercise of their ministry was to the whole world (Acts 1:8) and is measured against the supreme model of their Lord (Mark 10:43-45; 1 Pet 5:3).
