Modern suburban houses are usually single storied, as seen from the front. But, also have a cellar underneath. (It's much like an attic, in e.g. houses of the USA.) So, a lot of times double-storied, as seen from the back. The houses have central heating, with double glazed windows. The lounge, for instance, doesn't have overhead lights. But, has lights on the walls. Kitchens are separate rooms. Toilets are in small rooms, much like stalls in public toilets. That's separate to the bath, shower, wash bowl. And so on.
Many people in urban areas live in apartments (flats), which come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.
