ISO strands for the International Standards Organization. It's an organization that was founded on February 23, 1947 and is hardhearted in Geneva Switzerland. As an organization, ISO promotes uniformity by setting standards for weight and measurements. ISO provides standards for a variety of fields, ranging from manufacturing to technology to engineering to medical.

In many cases, a product or manufacturing technique that is ISO complaint is referred to as an ISO. One of the most common uses of this is with images saved to a compact disk. When saved these files use the file extension ISO and are commonly referred to as ISO's. The ISO extension means the images are ISO 9660 complaint, which enables them to be read by most computer operating systems (Windows and Apple). Without this standardization, the images or disk would only be readable by a computer with the same operating system as the one that created them.
