Belief in God and the Torah and observance of the commands in the Torah. Observant Jews dress modestly and keep kosher. They do not work on the Sabbath, and they pray in shul (Synagogue). The Torah demands honesty, self control and pleasant behavior and demeanor. Violence and wildness are forbidden, as is mockery and name-calling. Jewish men, and married women, keep their head covered. Education is of paramount importance, as Torah-learning is a mitzva (positive command). Marriages typically take place when the couple is in their early twenties.
OK, well firstly Judaism is a tribal religion. Anyone born to a Jewish mother inherits a place in the Jewish family. Aside from this, the only way a person can join Judaism is to formally convert to the religion.
Judaism has a cherished tradition of debate and discussion. Jewish scholars study in a Yeshiva, where they spend hours debating and analysing the holy Jewish text, the Torah. The Torah can be interpreted on many different levels.
Judaism is also a very colourful religion, in that there are Jews from all countries, and all ethnic backgrounds. A Black Ethiopian Jew will have a different culture from a Caucasian Swedish Jew. A Japanese Jew will have a different culture from an Italian Jew. What binds all Jews together is our shared religion and history.
Judaism is a religion, a family, and a people. A person born into the Jewish family remains Jewish *unless* they adopt another religion.
