Answer:
A landfill is a location designed for the systematic longterm storage of waste under conditions that will prevent the contamination of air and water.
A landfill may be designed for the storage of inert waste, sanitary waste (rubbissh) or hazardous industrial waste. The control measures become more stringent as the hazards associated with the wastes go up.
Typically a landfill consists of several cells, each of which is filled and completed before the next cell is used.
A cell is pit fitted with under drain piping and an impervious liner.
Waste is put into the cell and periodically covered with clay.
When the cell is full, a final covering of clay is applied, then a layer of topsoil is added to allow grass to be grown on he surface
Monitoring systems to check for water pollution or methane generation may be present.
I think that you are probably mistaking the word landgfill for the word 'landfill' and a landfill is a low area of land that is built up from deposits of solid refuse in layers covered by soil.
Landfill is the name given to garbage dumps, rubbish tips etc. Typically the local authority finds what they hope is a suitable site, perhaps an old quarry, and then all the garbage collected from residents is dumped there.

∙ 15y agoLandfills are great big open pits where rubbish gets dumped instead of being recycled. Sometimes they get covered in and landscaped and it has been known for housing to be built over them. Solid waste is often used as a polite term for human waste that goes down the toilet.

∙ 14y agoA landfill's purpose, is basically somewhere to dispose of all the garbage we create. The newer ones in the US are required to have a liner to prevent contaminated liquid from leaving the landfill and polluting our drinking water. The liner is made from compacting a thick layer of clay, then covering it with a detection zone (a couple layers of plastic mesh inside of two layers of filter fabric) that will direct any liquid that leaks to a collection point (if a leak is detected, the trash will have to be removed to fix the leak), another layer of clay is added on top of the detection zone, then a plastic liner, and finely three feet of sand to protect the plastic liner from the trash.

∙ 15y agoAn open landfill is esentially a large hole in the ground into which rubbish is dumped. The hole may be a disused quarry, open cast mine or clay pit which is then used as a place to dump rubbish. It is called an open landfill because it is open to the air and elements, it is not covered. Once the landfill has been filled with rubbish a layer of soil is usually placed on top and the area is then lanscaped.

As the contents rot, it can contaminate the water table and it also produces gas (methane).

Most solid waste in the United States is disposed of in landfills. Some waste is also incinerated to generate energy, while a smaller portion is recycled or composted.
The most common type of waste found in landfills is municipal solid waste, which includes household garbage, packaging materials, and other everyday items. This waste typically consists of a mixture of organic and inorganic materials.
Landfills are mostly comprised of municipal solid waste, which includes household trash, construction debris, and commercial waste. They also contain yard waste, recyclables, and sometimes hazardous materials. The waste in landfills decomposes over time, producing gas and leachate that must be managed to prevent environmental contamination.
Solid waste can be held in landfills, which are specially-designed sites where waste is compacted and buried to reduce its volume and minimize environmental impact. Additionally, solid waste can be stored in containers such as bins, dumpsters, or hazardous waste drums for collection and disposal.
Paper, yard waste, food waste, and plastics.
Landfills, usually, though solid human waste goes to a sewerage system.
The largest component of landfills is typically paper and cardboard waste. These materials make up a significant portion of municipal solid waste due to their widespread use in packaging and consumer products.
