Most asteroids are in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. But a few do come close to the Earth; these are called Near Earth Asteroids. You can see a list of NEAs, and the dates that they will come closest to the Earth, at www.spaceweather.com.

Asteroids and comets have collided with the Earth in the past, and someday one will collide with Earth in the future. Depending on the mass of the asteroid, the damage could be catastrophic. 65 million years ago, scientists now believe that an asteroid or comet hit the Earth, causing the extinction of the dinosaurs and most life on Earth.

A NEO is a Near Earth Object. It is is a Solar System object whose orbit brings it into close proximity with the Earth. All NEOs have a perihelion distance < 1.3 AU . They include a few thousand Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs), near Earth comets, a number of solar orbiting spacecraft, and meteoroids large enough to be tracked in space before striking the Earth. NEA have orbits that lie partly between 0.983 and 1.3 astronomical units away from the Sun. Asteroid 1989 FC approached Earth on March 23, 1989. The 300 meter missed the Earth by 700,000 kilometers passing through the exact position where the Earth was only 6 hours before. If the asteroid had impacted it would have created the largest explosion in recorded history. Asteroid 1950 DA will approach Earth on March 16, 2880, during its close approach it has been estimated as having a 1 in 300 chance of impacting with the Earth. It has a diameter of about a kilometer (.6 of a mile).

Obama has not explicitly stated his position for or against homeschooling. However, his position may be inferred by his close ties to, and 100% approval rating from, the NEA (National Education Association), as well as the NEA's public endorsement of Obama's educational reform proposals. NEA official position on homeschooling (http://homeschooling.families.com/blog/a-response-to-the-neas-2007-2008-homeschooling-resolution): "The National Education Association believes that home schooling programs based on parental choice cannot provide the student with a comprehensive education experience. When home schooling occurs, students enrolled must meet all state curricular requirements, including the taking and passing of assessments to ensure adequate academic progress. Home schooling should be limited to the children of the immediate family, with all expenses being borne by the parents/guardians. Instruction should be by persons who are licensed by the appropriate state education licensure agency, and a curriculum approved by the state department of education should be used. The Association also believes that home-schooled students should not participate in any extracurricular activities in the public schools. The Association further believes that local public school systems should have the authority to determine grade placement and/or credits earned toward graduation for students entering or re-entering the public school setting from a home school setting."
