An oxygen sensor is an electronic device that measures the proportion of oxygen (O2) in the gas or liquid being analyzed. The sensing element is usually made with a zirconium ceramic bulb coated on both sides with a thin layer of platinum and comes in both heated and unheated forms. The most common application is to measure the performance of internal combustion engines in automobiles and other vehicles. Divers also use a similar device to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in their breathing gas. Scientists use oxygen sensors to measure respiration or production of oxygen and use a different approach. Oxygen sensors are used in oxygen analyzers which find a lot of use in medical applications such as anesthesia monitors, respirators and oxygen concentrators. There are many different ways of measuring oxygen. These include using technologies such as zirconia, electrochemical (also known as Galvanic), infrared, ultrasonic and very recently laser. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.
All O2 sensors are threaded into the exhaust system at various points. Upstream O2 sensors are located before the catalytic converter(s) and downstream O2 sensors are located after the catalytic converter(s).
There are four o2 sensors on a montero sport.
The 2.5 has 2 O2 sensors (both on top of the engine) and the 3.5 has 4 O2 sensors (two on top, and two under the car).
The o2 sensors screw in. There is a special socket for removing the 02 sensors with a slot in the side to clear the wiring.
All the O2 sensors are threaded into the exhaust system at various points.
The O2 sensors are located between the exhaust manifolds and the cat converter. They screw in to the head pipes. Those are also called upstream O2 sensors and in some vehicles they are also called air/fuel sensors. There are also downstream O2 sensors that are located after the catalytic converter.
All O2 sensors are threaded into the exhaust system at various points.

The 1992 Ford Taurus has two oxygen (O2) sensors. Both O2 sensors are located upstream of the catalytic converter with one on each exhaust bank.
