Sikh festivals are based on various historical events and dates to do with births and martrydoms of different Sikh Gurus (teachers) or other people who were important to Sikhism. The most commonly celebrated or observed are the birthdays of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Gobind Singh, the martyrdom days of Guru Arjun Dev and Guru Teg Bahadur. As well, Guru Gobind Singh's son's martyrdom days are also observed. Another big event that is celebrated is Vasaikhi. It celebrates the birthday of the Sikhs as a people.
