synapsis (if you need proof then go to http://www.sumanasinc.com/webcontent/animations/content/meiosis.html)(Click to Animation, then go to Step-Through, then go to the 3rd slide of 11 and there is your proof.)

The pair of homologous chromosomes is called a tetrad and synapsis is the process.

Homologous chromosomes are pairs of chromosomes, one from the mother and one from the father, in which each homolog has the same genes at the same loci along their lengths. During prophase I in meiosis, the two chromosomes in each homologous pair line up next to each other. This pairing process is called synapsis, and the resulting homologous pair is called a bivalent in reference to the two chromosomes or a tetrad in reference to the four sister chromatids involved. During synapsis, pieces of the homologous chromosomes may exchange places, so that each chromosome of a homologous pair contains alleles from both parents. This process is called crossing over.

No, only in meiosis

Does homologous chromosomes pair up during meiosis 1?

Yes, during prophase I.

What is Bivalence?

Bivalency is the quality of being bivalent - relating to a pair of homologous synapsed chromosomes which occur during meiosis.

What trem describes the exchange of genetic material between members of a homologous pair of chromosomes?

Crossing over during meiosis results in to exchange of genetic material between members of a homologous pair of chromosomes.

Is homologous chromosomes only present in cells that undergo meiosis?

Usually they dont as homologous chromosomes form bivalents with other homologous chromosomes and crossing over occurs between the 2. But if a chiasmata does form between the t homologous chromosomes they can change information.

What stage in meiosis do homologous chromosomes come together?

During meiosis, the homologous chromosomes come together during prophase I. Pairs of homologous chromosomes align during a process called synapsis and form a tetrad (four sister chromatids, two from each pair of homologous chromosomes). During synapsis, crossing over may occur, during which homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material.

What do homologous chromosomes do in prophase 1?

Homologous chromosomes do not pair during mitosis. they only pair in meiosis to form tetrads.

What happens to each pair of duplicated homologous chromosomes during meiosis 1?

pairing of homologous chromosomes and recombination of genetic material takes place

Occurs when homologous chromosomes do not separate in meiosis?

Nondisjunction occurs when homologous chromosomes do not seperate. -Amber ^-^

What is unique to mitosis and not a part of meiosis?

homologous chromosomes behave independently Pairing of homologous chromosomes allowing independent segregation and crossing over is unique to meiosis. In mitosis, homologous chromosomes behave independently.

meiosis

When do homologous chromosomes separate into the daughter cells?

They are separated in Anaphase I of Meiosis I.
