I always felt their were 6 basic mouse functions when I teach computers.
1) single left click ( in start menu programs)
2) double left click ( to open desktop icons)
3) right click ( to open action menus )
4 click and drag ( move something or scroll)
5) hover the mouse ( put it on something without clicking and an action happens ex a pop up , "all programs" button in XP will open
6) wand the mouse ( like click and drag but select a large group of text to print selection. or multi- select a group of files

the basic mouse actions are left click, right click, scroll, drag and that's it maybe theres more but that's all i can think off.
Well the mouse sends the movements of it to the computer. A mouse with a mouse-ball has rollers inside of it that move with the ball and from there can operate similar to a keyboard. An optical or 'laser' mouse is much more advanced.
