Economists and planners in the field of education consider double-shift or multiple-shifts school not only maximum utilization of tangible resources but also creation of jobs for society that help in reducing per pupil expenditures, controlling fixed cost of education, brining a check on the mushroom growth of school buildings, lowering the maintenance cost, better enriching libraries and appropriate equipping of laboratories. As the both shifts and sessions use many the same tangible facilities of the school i.e. building, laboratory, library, so such institutions have lower unit cost as compared to single-shift schools (Bray, 1990). Ultimately these all factors help in reducing the overall expenditure on education sector.

Whereas many argue that double-shift schools are not economical in any way; neither in terms of variable cost nor in terms of fixed cost (Linden, 2001). Because the variable cost of a double-school will also increase if teaching and non-teaching staff is hired separately for second shift or morning shift staff is paid double to serve in the afternoon session. Likewise the fixed cost will also increase as there two times faster wear and tear of the school facilities and the building as well. It will result into higher maintenance cost and increased repair and renovation cost.
