Mitochondria provide ATP for the cell. ATP is used for mostly all of cellular processes.

Per glucose, mitochondria can produce roughly 36 ATP per glucose molecule that is broken down. Cells without mitochondria just produce 2 ATP per glucose. As you can see, there is a huge advantage in having mitochondria, as we get 18x more ATP per glucose through mitochondria.
