The business model for a product development firm is based on time and materials. They sell technical expertise and resources, not manufactured goods. The goal of a successful product developer is to supply their clients with the best possible manufacturable designs and ideas in a relatively short period of time.
With an associate’s degree in interior design, you’ll be able to work as an assistant in your home’s interior design, helping with space planning and material selection, as well as client presentations. You’ll also be able to take on furniture sales and showroom management roles, or pursue a bachelor’s degree for a more advanced career in the field.
Advantage: Can be Cost-EffectiveThe use of contract manufacturers means that the hiring firm does not need to purchase expensive manufacturing facilities, equipment, machinery, raw materials or hire specialized labor. This not only allows the hiring firm to focus solely on sales, advertising and marketing, it allows a firm that is comparatively more efficient at manufacturing to carry out the process. As a result, hiring firms often benefit from economies of scale and the purchasing power of large manufacturers. All of these factors lower production costs.Advantage: Divides RiskAnother benefit of contract manufacturing is it spreads the risk of developing a new product across multiple companies. Were a company to carry out all aspects of production single-handedly, it would be taking a huge gamble on the success of that product. As companies would essentially live or die on the success of a new product, risk-taking and innovation would be disincentivized.Disadvantage: Binding ContractsOnce a contract is signed with a manufacturer, the hiring firm essentially calls all the shots. This can lead to serious problems for the reputation of the manufacturer if the wrong firm is partnered with. Differences in quality standards can lead to disputes. Cost-cutting behavior on the part of the hiring firm (who cannot control labor costs) can result in the use of lower quality materials, which can compromise the overall quality of the product. Consequently, through no fault of their own a manufacturer can be linked to an inferior product, possibly damaging their future business prospects.Disadvantage: Job LossesContract manufacturing is essentially a form of outsourcing, much of which occurs overseas. The practice of global outsourcing is commonly criticized by both economic nationalists and domestic labor advocates. Critics accuse transnational firms of moving jobs overseas that would otherwise be filled by domestic workers. The shift in U.S. manufacturing from factories in the beltway to cheaper labor markets in Mexico, China and India has been sharply criticized as it has put many workers out of the job--many of which are too old to be retrained in new sectors.
The services engineer is responsible for all electrical/mechanical/services works for the project. This includes the gas, water, waste water, electrics, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lifts etc. They should be looking to design a cost efficient, environmentally friendly system that fits in with the brief of the client. As with all of the design team members they must frequently liaise with the architect and other members of the design team as necessary. They must make sure that their system meets health and safety requirements. They may also sub-let a section of their work to a specialist firm, e.g. for lifts and escalators etc.
Before anybody answers Architect I will tell you now it is no highly paid at all (as I have been researching this question and that is a popular answer, I've also studied and worked in architecture and people always wrongly think I'm well off). Contrary to popular belief architects earn £30,000-£40,000 a year and perhaps more in London or in a senior role. You also have 5 years worth of education and 2 years work experience (RIBA framework) to get through first. It is not the most value for money but it's an enjoyable creative job that hardly repeats itself (every project being unique). I suspect the highly paid design jobs are freelance jobs but they come with risks. It's not so much the profession with design but how high up the ladder you have climbed and the contacts you've made. If you're a director of a design firm then you could be earning around £100k+ per year depending on the profession.
There's no such thing as a manufacturing firm. However, there's manufacturing factories. These factories work to convert raw materials into edible and finished goods.
You would probably have to study autmotive engineering, mechanical drawing, and CAD design for a firm like Lamborghini to even begin to consider hiring you. Studying robotics and AI probably wouldn't hurt, either.
