Air springs are just "bags" of air used in the place of metal coil springs. They can be computer controlled or manually controlled to alter ride height by allowing more air in or out of the "bags." Check out this website if you want to know more: http://www.easystreetair.com/faq.htm
Hope this helps,

Auto parts stores sell a kit with springs and shocks that replaces the rear air bags with springs. Been there, done that.
The distance by air from Melbourne to Alice Springs is 1888 km, or 1173 miles.
The air suspension system in a 1994 Lincoln Continental consists of air springs, a compressor, and a height-sensing control system. The air springs replace traditional coil springs, using compressed air to adjust the vehicle's ride height and maintain a smooth ride. The compressor pumps air into the springs as needed, while the height sensors monitor the vehicle's level and adjust accordingly. A diagram would typically illustrate these components and their connections, showing how air flows between the compressor and the air springs.

There are actually four types of springs used in the suspension system. They are coil springs, leaf springs, torsion bars, and air springs.
yes, I put Springs on my car And removed my air ride bags Springs from a crown vic with springs fit right on, no problems rides nice too, Mike
The shocks on the Town car are actually regular shocks front and rear and are separate from the air springs. They are fairly inexpensive. The rear has air springs rather than mechanical steel springs. Do not mess with them if they are working. Replacement air springs can be purchased from http://www.arnottindustries.com/ for around $100 each and they will last for another 10 years. If you can change spark plugs you can change an air spring. Arnott gives detailed instructions. Don't be afraid of the air suspension, it is much superior over the steel springs.
